Asher Roth
Asleep in The Bread Aisle
(Loud/SRC/Universal)
We'll admit it. Street Rich didn't think Asher's debut would
live up to the year of hype he received. But at the same time,
we're glad he did. Not only did he deliver on making a great
album, but possibly is a lead for album of the year with "I Love College" easily in the running for single or anthem of the year.
Rick Ro$$
Deeper than Rap
(Maybach Music / IDJMG)
Jadakiss
The Last Kiss
(Rocafella / IDJMG)
This album is classic Kiss. Just the album 2009 needed to show that hip-hop still has a pulse, and it's beating better than ever. So, with this presumably Kiss's first and last release on Rocafella, expect to repeat this sentence after you hear every song on the album: Jadakiss is still a BEAST...
Mims
Guilt
(American King / Capitol)
Mims had a chance to do one thing with Guilt. Shut up anyone that said he's just a lucky a one hit wonder. Get rid of that "Guilt" for not meeting so many people's expectations. Sorry to say, the guilt continues with his latest, and probably last, on a major.
Major Releases
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
Hasbro / Dreamsworks Pictures
State of Play
Universal Studios
For what it's worth, this movie rocks. Yes, the plot commonly falls apart, and YES there is a valid argument that Skids and Mudflap are the most stereotyped animated characters that may ever come on a $200 million budgeted film. And yes ... Megan Fox really didn't have a point of being in the film except that she is the sexiest thing walking our planet right now. With that in mind, ask yourself this: What's more important? A centralized plot, or giant robots whooping each other's ass for two hours?
Normally when you have an all star cast, expect one of two things. Either a really outstanding movie, or a slug fest... with your fist, hitting your face repeatedly. Thankfully, State of Play isn't the latter of the two..
Crank: High Voltage
Lionsgate
The plot: Man is dying unless he gets his real heart back. How it starts: Man falls out of helicopter, lands on a car, and is walking around two minutes later. Concensus - BAD ASS!!
The Hangover
Warner Bros. Pictures
Easily the shocker hit of 2009, The Hangover is literally a mix of every comedic hit you loved the last couple years. What sold us on it was Mike Tyson knocking the hell out of Zach, and a great improvisation by the cast.
Star Trek
Bad Robot / Paramount Pictures
J.J. Abrams is 2009's Steven Spielberg. The man makes taking a cult phenomenon, rewriting his own story, and delivering an immensely action-packed and entertaining piece of work. So, Cloverfield 2 time now?
Considering Ross had to try to pull an Art of War on 50 in order for his album to sell, Ross actually put out a good album to start the summer off. The only thing that we feel is a pet peeve for any artists is a crapload of features. Really, did you need The Dream on "All I Want"?
Wu-Tang to release new album, "Chambers," June 30th.
