STREET RICH HEALTH & WELLNESS: INGROWN HAIR!
Hi Rebecca,

Great articles so far! My question is about my boyfriend who is black and has a lot of hair bumps under his chin in the neck area and on the sides of his face. He is a soon to be signed rap artist (MC) and is having pictures done. The photographer has to clean up all the pictures because his face is two colors, very dark under his chin and on the sides where the bumps are and lighter every where else. He hates it and so do I because he is very handsome and he thinks it looks bad and some times the bumps bleed on his clothes and that is so not cool at all. Can you help him with some info?
Sherry Stein, Los Angeles, CA
Hello Sherry and thank you for this question. This is a problem that many men have and just try to live with it thinking that since their fathers and grandfathers had the problem that they have to also.

This is a matter of skin conditioning and reading labels. Your boyfriend should never put any alcohol on his face. Many men put aftershave or their cologne on their face and this will cause burning to the face that will cause the skin to thicken enough to block the opening or hair follicle opening so the hair when it grows will not exit the skin but because it is blocked turn and go down instead of up. When this happens the hair is now an ingrown hair and usually will fester and accumulate blood and pus in it until it is opened and the hair is removed.

I have counseled many men with this same problem and I created a skin care that is called K.M. 1,2,3 workout. The first step is to condition the skin by using a liquid cleanser to wash the face. In order to shave the face a very sharp razor should be used if the hair is curly so the hair will be blunt cut. The soap used to shave should be the same liquid soap used to wash the face, do not use a thick foam soap with a disposable razor because the foam will stop the razor from cutting close enough. After shaving, never apply an alcohol based cream or liquid to the skin because of what I described early it will burn the skin. When the skin has even a slight burn the skin will darken and after continuous use there is a major difference in the color of the forehead and the cheek and neck area. Rinse the skin with warm water and then apply cool water to the shaved area. The next step is very important because it will keep the skin soft and pliable for the next shave so apply a light coating of moisturizer to the entire face.

If your boyfriend uses an electric shaver instead of the wet method of shaving the process is similar in that the skin should be cleansed with a liquid soap and thoroughly dried before shaving. Never use an electric shaver that has rotary blades or has a screen over the cutting blades. Purchase the same clippers that the barber uses to trim and edge up hair cuts because these will cut very close to the skin and blunt cut the hair. The clippers should be cleaned and disinfected daily to prevent infection of the skin. After the hair has been cut on the face it should be cleansed and conditioned with the moisturizer and not have any form of shaving after shave patted on the freshly shaved skin. Never place the aftershave lotion on the face because this is highly concentrated with alcohol and will burn the skin.

This burning of the skin will do two things: (1) cause the skin to thicken enough to block the hair from coming through and causing an ingrown hair and (2) cause the skin to burn and discolor darker in the areas that the chemical was placed.

Sherry thank you again for this question because I have seen so many men whether they are old or young, professional entertainers, mill workers, athletes or career oriented men challenged with this dilemma. I am so happy to give out the solution to this problem in case they are not wealthy enough to have a professional barber shave them daily they can take care of their skin on a daily bases and avoid razor bumps and ingrown hair.
